Carnival Celebration

Every year on Rose Monday, all classes celebrate Carnival together. The students spend the morning with their class teacher in colorfully decorated classrooms. The fixed program includes the presentation of costumes, fun games, songs, dances, and a communal breakfast. The older children can also visit a self-designed “disco.” A cheerful polonaise through the whole school is the highlight of the festive morning.

Summer Festival

The summer festival has become a firm tradition at the Johann-Hinrich-Fehrs-School. On the schoolyard and the adjacent sports field, there are numerous attractions such as games, dance and sports performances, face painting, as well as cake, beverage, and grill stands. In the classrooms, Turkish specialties are offered, and flea market items are sold.

The festival is very well received by students, parents, and friends of the school and has developed into a popular neighborhood festival – especially valuable in a district where there are otherwise few comparable events.

Advent

During Advent, the school community comes together regularly to get in the mood for Christmas. The singing of Christmas carols creates a contemplative atmosphere that characterizes school life during this special time.

Since our culture is shaped by Christianity, it is important for the school to bring children closer to the origins and traditions of Christian festivals such as Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. Many students experience these customs only to a limited extent in their family environment. All the more, the school sees itself as a place where cultural and religious traditions are conveyed and experienced together.

Christmas

The Christmas service is an integral part of school life and takes place on the last day of school before the Christmas vacations. It is organized in cooperation with the Bugenhagen parish and prepared by a team of teachers and the pastor. As a rule, all children of the school participate – regardless of their religious affiliation.

The musical arrangements are provided by the music working groups, including the flute and Orff group, as well as the choir. The theater group enriches the service with the performance of a Christmas play. Parents, staff, and friends of the school are cordially invited to celebrate with us. The Christmas service is a festive and communal conclusion to the calendar year.

Active Break

Several times a school year, the Johann-Hinrich-Fehrs-School holds “Active Breaks.” In an extended break, all students, together with the teachers, experience special offers that enrich school life and strengthen the sense of community.

The activities include a flea market on the schoolyard, a disco in the gymnasium, exercise activities such as aerobics, and a healthy breakfast buffet. The aim of the Active Break is to promote encounters across class boundaries, to bring movement into everyday school life, and to shape school as a place of shared experience.

Sports Events

At the Johann-Hinrich-Fehrs-School, sporting events have a firm place in the school year. In the summer, the federal youth games in track and field take place for grades 2 to 4, supplemented by relays or tournaments. The first grades complete age-appropriate movement games.

In the winter semester, federal youth gymnastics competitions are held for grades 3 and 4, for which intensive practice is done in sports lessons beforehand. In addition, the school participates with selected students in soccer tournaments as well as in municipal sports events such as running and track and field competitions. The aim is to promote enjoyment of exercise and to experience sporting success together.

Mathematics Olympiad

The Mathematics Olympiad is a nationwide problem-solving competition that is also offered at the Johann-Hinrich-Fehrs-School. The aim is to promote enjoyment of mathematical thinking and to discover and support particularly interested and gifted students.

In the elementary school area, children in the 4th grade can participate, and younger students are also welcome to join. The selection is made via an internal school round, which is organized by the mathematics teachers. The best participants then qualify for the next competition level. The Mathematics Olympiad offers tricky thinking tasks and motivates students to solve mathematical problems creatively and logically.
